Return to Charlotte

And so I’m back in Charlotte for another weekend. As exciting as our building is down here, I’m hoping I have an opportunity to see something else besides a large room with no windows.

Windows 2000

A worm is currently attacking Windows 2000 machines around the world. Microsoft at its finest.

Among companies affected by the worm and its variations were ABC, CNN, The Associated Press, The New York Times and Caterpillar Inc. In California, San Diego County said it needed to cleanse 12,000 computers of the bug. ABC News producers had to use electric typewriters Tuesday to prepare copy for their “World News Tonight” broadcast, according to spokesman Jeffrey Schneider.

Here at work, we’re beginning our patching across our entire environment to try to prevent infection. The sooner the better, since one infection point tends to spread so rapidly in these cases.

The Passion of the Creation Debate

In the same week The Passion of the Christ and the evolution/creation debate arrived in my inbox. I hadn’t given much thought to either topic lately, primarily because I’m relatively content in my agnosticism, and my sense that evolution has won the debate, even if it has yet to win the hearts (or at leas the minds) of people.

All this makes a link like the one a friend of mine sent me amusing in an unintended way; it simultaneously misses and makes the key point. The creationist/intelligent design movement doesn’t seek to have ANY evolutionary theory taught. They specifically want their view taught and to discredit the scientific theory. And for, in my view, an entirely credible reason.

All religions inherently derive their power and influence by providing an explanation for the origin of man. If a higher power created us, then we, in turn, must respect the wishes of that power or face the consequences. To deny that God was not involved, in any way, in our creation, as evolution does, is to deny religion its legitamcy. The consequences of defying a God who didn’t create you are significantly smaller.

Which in turn leads me to agree that the two concepts are fundamentally opposed, and that I’ve long since made my decision about which one I accept.

Afternoon Delight

As I sit here working yet another weekend, performing triage on applications after their migrations to our new data center, I’ve been humming the lyrics to the god-awful-catchy tune Afternoon Delight. The song’s been stuck in my head like an uninvited house guest ever since I heard it on the radio yesterday morning during my commute to work, and I’m hoping it leaves soon.

If not, I’ll be forced to take drastic action…

The Butterfly Effect

Watching The Butterfly Effect earlier tonight left me relatively unaffected, as the movie dragged in some parts, skipped a few beats in others, and otherwise had a mediocre plotline. Ashton Kutcher, despite his bets attempt, failed to convince, and the only way the movie maintained any suspense was through the use of clever cinematography.

It did produce one effect despite its otherwise mediocre movie status. It managed to temporarily puncture my sense of invulnerability that we depend upon to move through a day. Thankfully that’s all back to normal. Amazing what a view of the Aizu Wakamatsu Train Cam can do.

An old fashioned steam engine

Bryan claims to have seen a steam engine last night on the Aizu Wakamatsu train cam. Doing a little more research, I came across an article (PDF) that provided some basic background information.

This 4-6-2 Class C57 retired in 1969 but was restored this year by JR East’s Omiya Works. It will be run on the Banetsu West Line between Niitsu and Aizu-Wakamatsu on most weekends from May to November. There will also be some runs between Koriyama on the Tohoku shinkansen and Aizu-Wakamatsu.

Update: For those interested, a tour is available from the UK.

NTT East

NTT East, the site that is hosting the streaming video of Aizu Wakamatsu, has details of their Internet Service plans. Want to feel jealous? check out the 47 Mbps downstream/5 Mbps upstream DSL connection.

Makes you wonder why we can’t get our act together here and roll out true broadband.
